1

Boasting some of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean, Malta is considered the ultimate summer holiday destination for a lot Europeans. This tiny island offers you idyllic coastal views, delicious fresh seafood and picturesque golden sand beaches bustling with activities for both families and thrill-seekers.

Here’s a run-down of the island’s very best sandy beaches. Read on for the best for sunbathing, diving and hiking.

1. Golden Bay, Mellieha

Located along the unspoiled Western coast of Malta, Golden bay is without doubt one of the best and most popular beaches on the island. With golden sand, clear water and high cliffs behind the bay, it’s easy to see why.

Golden Bay is located in the midst of pristine and largely underdeveloped countryside. The clear blue sea and cliffs that are surrounding the entire bay provide outstanding snorkeling and nearby trails that are great for hiking. During the past years, a lot of effort has been placed into maintaining the beach clean, safe and environmentally sustainable, and successfully so – Golden Bay was awarded the Beach of Quality status in 2015.

Golden Bay also provides great facilities, which make it a perfect spot for beach barbeques, parties and family get-togethers. There are two restaurants in the area – Munchies and Agliolio. The latter is an Italian fine dining restaurant within the stunning Radisson Golden Sands Hotel, offering outstanding food and a view to the bay below.

The beach can easily be accessed by car and there is free parking just off the coast. The nearest bus stop is a 5 minute walk away but bear in mind that the buses tend to get really crowded during peak season.

2. Ghajn Tuffieha, Manikata

Ghajn Tuffieha, Maltese for “Apple’s Eye”, is situated behind the small village of Manikata on the North-West coast of Malta. Compared to Golden Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha is smaller and somewhat less accessible and therefore less crowded.

As for facilities, there’s a decent snack bar on the beach and sun beds and umbrellas for hire. Ghajn Tuffieha is the perfect place for spending a lazy Sunday afternoon swimming and sunbathing but if you’re looking for activities, you’re better off sticking to Golden Bay.

Also, bear in mind that climbing up over 100 steps to reach the parking lot can feel somewhat effortful after you’ve just spent a full day under the blazing sun. Remember to keep yourself hydrated!

3. Mellieha Bay, Ghadira

Located in the North of Malta, Mellieha Bay is the largest and one of the most popular sandy beaches in Malta. Easily accessible by car and public transportation, it’s a great choice for families as well as for the active traveller who likes to get their surf on.

Mellieha is also just a few minutes away from the Cirkewwa terminal, where ferries leave to Gozo from so if you’re planning to do some island hopping, make sure to have a pit stop at the gorgeous Mellieha Bay.

Bear in mind, though, that despite it’s size Mellieha Bay also tends to get very crowded, especially on the weekends.

4. St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk

q

Located on the East coast near Marsaxlokk fisherman’s village, St Peter’s pool is slightly off the beaten path, which, in our opinion, adds to its charm.

Unlike the beaches listed above, St Peter’s Pool is not a sandy beach, although it’s possible to sunbathe on the flat rocky surface around the bay. Getting there can be slightly tricky and you’ll need a car, which is why the pool is mostly frequented by locals.

St Peter’s Pool is the ideal spot for those who are looking for tranquility, far from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy beaches.
